Petra, Jordan: A Nomad’s Dream in Stone and Story
One of my favorite travel destinations of 2023 - Petra, Jordan. It’s the adventure meets architecture for me. This was such a fun place to tour around, with and as a UNESCO World Heritage site, there’s just a different kind of energy here.
A world that once existed, blending Eastern traditions with Hellenistic architecture. Trade routes that linked China, India, Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Syria... Thinking about what kinds of adventurers must have stood in this very place all of those years ago (300 BC!), and what kinds of journeys they had traveled, makes this all the more special to my free-spirited, nomadic soul.
To give more crazy context to this - Petra was “lost” to the Western world from about the 14th century until its rediscovery in 1812 by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. Incredible, how what was once such a significant place, could just be “lost” for all those years...
