Embracing Chaos: How Travel Taught This Impatient Nomad to Savor Life’s Slow Moments
I was talking to a friend yesterday about what it is to be an impatient person. For those who have learned Ayurveda, you’ll know what I mean when I say I’m Vata-Pitta. For those who don’t know, this means my “elements” (read Eastern medicine) are air & fire. I’m energetic, fast flowing & easily fiery. Prior to (heavy) studies on mindfulness, it was the perfect combination for disaster. If people didn’t keep up with my speed, I was quickly frustrated.. & I didn’t always know how to keep this frustration to myself.
Fast forward to travel life. Depending on the country & culture, things simply *will not* move at a fast pace. It might be frantic, chaotic, but in the end it can often be inefficient & slow. Think you can take a bus + train + flight in 1 day? Not a chance. One of those 3 will be delayed, canceled, or break down. I guarantee you 😂
Sounds frustrating, right? It used to be! But with practice,
I’ve learned to breathe through it & simply savor the moment. With the right mindset, this can really become one of the joys of travel. The complete nonsense of it all!
The other thing I’ve learned is flexibility. The flexibility to accept that plans can change last minute, that flights can be missed (completely out of your control), that often you discover that when you don’t plan too far ahead, all of the opportunities for the greatest life experiences will just land in your lap for all of the right reasons - or because it’s just what you need at the time… Yes, even the lack of WiFi on remote islands that forces you to close your laptop and tune back into yourself just when you need it (the struggle is real) - or simply to take some time for more creative, technology free pursuits.
The truth is, the work will always eventually get done, this might even teach fellow CEOs to better delegate 😉. The right clients will come in, & the more open you are to changing plans, the more joy you’ll gain from this lifestyle.
Are there any other traits you feel you need as an extended stay digital nomad? 👀
